Abstract

Six new anionic bismuth-oxido clusters containing trifluoroacetate ligands were prepared. These include two new Bi <subscript>6</subscript> O <subscript>8</subscript> clusters: [M(NCMe) <subscript>2</subscript> (H <subscript>2</subscript> O) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>3</subscript> [Bi <subscript>6</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -O) <subscript>4</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -OH) <subscript>4</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>12</subscript> ] with an octahedral Bi <subscript>6</subscript> O <subscript>4</subscript> (OH) <subscript>4</subscript> core (M = Ni, 1a; Co, 1b) and four Bi <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>2</subscript> clusters, {[Co(NCMe) <subscript>6</subscript> ][Bi <subscript>4</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -O) <subscript>2</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>10</subscript> ]} <subscript>n</subscript> (2a), {[Co{HC(MeCO) <subscript>2</subscript> (MeCNH)} <subscript>2</subscript> ][Bi <subscript>4</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -O) <subscript>2</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>10</subscript> ]·2[CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ]·2[CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> H]·2[H <subscript>2</subscript> O]} <subscript>n</subscript> (2b), {[Cu(NCMe) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> [Bi <subscript>4</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -O) <subscript>2</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>10</subscript> ]·2[CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> H]} <subscript>n</subscript> (2c), and {[Me <subscript>4</subscript> N] <subscript>2</subscript> [Bi <subscript>4</subscript> (μ <subscript>3</subscript> -O) <subscript>2</subscript> (CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> ) <subscript>10</subscript> ]·2[CF <subscript>3</subscript> CO <subscript>2</subscript> H]} <subscript>n</subscript> (2d). These are among the first bismuth-oxido anionic clusters synthesized, and the first to have transition metal countercations. The Bi <subscript>6</subscript> O <subscript>8</subscript> anion in 1a and 1b is a high-symmetry octahedron. Additionally, two of the new Bi <subscript>4</subscript> O <subscript>2</subscript> clusters are arranged in 1D polymeric structures via bridging carboxylate ligands. The cation in compound 2c had not been previously characterized and was also observed in the synthesis of [Co{HC(MeCO) <subscript>2</subscript> (MeCNH)} <subscript>2</subscript> ][Bi(NO <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>6</subscript> ] (3). The new compounds were characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis.
