Abstract

Since end of 2012 a new therapeutical approach for the treatment of type 2 diabetes is available in Germany. It relies on the modulation of glucose re-absorption in the kidney by inhibition of so called Sodium Glucose Linked Transporters (SGLT) thereby leading to therapeutical glucosuria. Putting the kidney in the centre of therapeutical approach of glucose regulation is unfamiliar for physicians. Therefore, it is helpful to elucidate the underlying renal mechanisms and to present the advantages and disadvantages of this new therapeutic class.<br /> (© Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.)
