Abstract
- Diabetes patient education has emerged as an integral component of comprehensive diabetes care during the past 50 years. The medical model of information transfer is now inadequate to support the variety of effective techniques which have been shown to influence patients' knowledge and health behavior. To cope with rapidly changing patterns of diabetes care, diabetes education must develop new models and modes. This article presents a re-evaluation of the traditional concepts of diabetes education and identifies new challenges and new directions for the 1990s.
