Abstract
- Mirizzi syndrome is a rare biliary disease caused by compression on the common bile duct by a stone located in the gallbladder or cystic duct. In rare cases an association with gallbladder carcinoma has been described. The pathogenesis seems ascribable to long-term stasis of stones that causes worsening compression on the common bile duct. The diagnosis, in the absence of specific symptoms, is usually obtained by means of an endoscopic cholangiography or during laparotomy. Proposed treatments are surgical or endoscopic. There are rare descriptions of Mirizzi syndrome complicated by the presence of gallbladder carcinoma, but no reports of Mirizzi syndrome complicated by the incidental retention of a Dormia basket in the cystic duct. We report a peculiar case of Mirizzi syndrome associated with carcinoma of the gallbladder and complicated by the incidental retention of a Dormia basket in the cystic duct, surgically treated with success.
