Abstract

This article presents the principal results of research completed in 2012 in San Bernardino Chalchihuapan in the municipality of Ocoyucan (in the state of Puebla, Mexico). The study's general objective was to analyze--through the ethnographic focus as a methodological basis and the social imaginary as a theoretical foundation--the elements involved in parents' school selection and the construction of related social imaginaries. The findings include the interrelation of school selection with aspects of the socioeconomic, linguistic, and political/religious context of the town; points that configure a double image of the institution. Such results complicate the view of the indigenous school by showing it configured and penetrated by the context and various individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
