Abstract

The article provides a publishing history of the book "Forty Years in Canada," written by Samuel Benfield Steele. Steele was a former member of the North West Mounted Police and was notable for his military service in the Red River Expedition of 1870 and the second Boer War in South Africa. His exploits were covered in popular culture in Canada, the U.S., and Great Britain in the form of both fictionalized accounts of his life and through articles appearing in periodicals and newspapers. American journalist Mollie Glenn Niblett was hired in 1912 as a literary agent and editor for Steele's manuscript in Great Britain, choosing Seeley Service and Co. in London, England in 1913. The book was eventually published in 1915 by Herbert Jenkins of London, England.
