Abstract

We present a gaskinetic analysis on the farfield density properties for jet flows into a vacuum from nozzles with different exit shapes. It is found that at farfield, the density distributions for jets from a rectangular and a round exit are essentially identical, whereas that at a planar exit is quite different. Different from many past empirical farfield solutions, these exact ones consist of multiple terms involving several cosine functions; hence, they are more complex. At regions with large angles off the centerline, exponentially dropping factors are dominant for the solutions to jet flows from a round and a rectangular exit; on the contrary, for the planar exit scenario, the contributions from the exponential terms become insignificant.
