Examines attitudes towards rural housing construction and land use controls in several villages in Zhejiang, China. Reason for villagers in densely populated and productive agricultural regions use scarce farmland to construct housing; Effort of the government to conserve arable land to ensure national food security; Failure of the government to control housing construction in the countryside.
