Abstract

Feeding high-performance piglets a supplement containing vitamin C proved it could increase pre-weaning growth rates on a college unit. It was widely believed that piglets received adequate vitamin C from their mother's milk, said Harper Adams University College researcher Alan Stewart. Adding vitamin C at a rate of 0.3g/kg creep feed boosted pre-weaning gains by 40g a day. With the absence of a response post-weaning, Stewart advised supplementing the vitamin from seven days of age until the first week after weaning.
