Abstract

The author discusses the history of the African (United) Baptist Association of Nova Scotia, established by former American slave Richard Preston who moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1816. He founded the Cornwallis Street Baptist in Halifax, created the African Baptist Association, and died in 1861. A discussion of spiritually-inspired African-Canadian literature, focusing on Africadian, or Afro-Maritime, literature by authors including David George, Boston, King, and F. R. Langford, is presented. The poem entitled "The Gospel of X" by George Elliott Clarke, is also presented.
