Abstract

Running gears with driven independently rotating wheel pairs allow for perfect steering and are discussed since several years. A significant reduction of both wheel and rail wear is the main expected benefit. The idea has been adopted within the DLR project "Next Generation Train" (NGT) in order to facilitate a train concept in light-weight design and double-deck configuration with continued floors on both levels. After the requirements had been discussed running gears with single wheel pairs have been favored and are now under detailed examination. Surprisingly, multibody simulations not only show improvements while negotiating curves but also predict wear reduction while the train is running on straight track compared to a reference vehicle with classical wheel sets. This paper introduces the running gear concept of the NGT, presents simulation results and comments on the unexpected wear reduction potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
