Abstract

An essay is presented which discusses the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in Cambodia and the polity Campā, Vietnam from the 10th through the 13th centuries. Particular focus is given to the relationship between the development of Tantric Buddhism and Avalokiteśvara. An overview of the depiction of Avalokiteśvara in Khmer bronze statues is provided. Buddhist texts and manuscripts, including from Campā and Cambodia, are discussed.
