Abstract
- The article discusses the relation of white poverty in Kentucky and West Virginia in relation to 1960s U.S. liberalism and the development of the War on Poverty government programs. Topics include journalistic coverage of poverty and unemployment in coal mining areas, racial ideology regarding the Anglo-Saxon identity of poor rural whites, and the 1960 presidential campaign of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy (JFK) in West Virginia. The 1961 U.S. Area Redevelopment Act (ARA) is noted.
