Abstract
- In the recent paper [JQSRT 141 (2014) 14-23] it is stated that the scattering matrix element 34 for the random mixture in the framework of geometrical optics is equal to zero, i.e. no circular polarization can be born from the initial linear polarization in the random mixture, because in the geometrical optics all phase effects are neglected. However, the phase shift between parallel and perpendicular components in total internal reflection leads to the birth of circular polarization. In this work we investigate this phenomenon and show that the effect of the phase shift is really not negligible and matrix element 34 can notably differ from zero. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
