Abstract

This paper analyses the construction of offensive sequences ending with a shot of one of the best Spanish basketball teams in the youth category (Real Madrid). Based on the data obtained using the SOBL-2 observation instrument, developed ad hoc by Fernández, Camerino, Anguera and Jonsson (2009), two analyses were performed: one, a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis -using the SPSS program, version 19.0- and the other, aimed at finding temporal patterns -using the software Theme, version 5.0-, which have enabled us to characterise the construction of offensive sequences -effective and ineffective- that end in a shot. Furthermore, the comparison of these sequences with those of elite basketball highlighted the difficulties and/or limitations that basketball players of this age have under the current premises of the game corresponding to the youth category. The results suggest that it would be a good idea to adapt the game of basketball in the youth category based on the clear difficulty that players find in proving themselves competent at making outside shots.
