Abstract

Magnetic fields appear to be a ubiquitous feature of the Universe, being present on all astrophysical scales. They are now realized to play an important role in a number of phenomena, for example the formation of stars and planetary systems, pulsar radiation mechanisms, and high-energy events associated with galaxies. Dynamo theory attempts to explain howvery weak 'seed'fields can be amplified and maintained against decay by motions in electrically conducting fluids, such as fill most of the Universe.
