Abstract

The article presents information on United Farm Workers of America (U.F.W), working in Strawberry fields. The author says that their hands are sticky from the juice of bright red berries. The dirt of the field and the sweet liquid have left a shiny patina on the knees of their pants, their shirt cuffs and elbows. They are all short and dark skinned. Some speak Spanish; others, the indigenous languages of Oaxaca and southern Mexico. The author says that these men who sleep in the reeds are testimony to the economic decline of farm workers in the past decade and a half, but they are more than a symbol of exploitation. Last year they be- came participants in the largest organizing drive in the country, part of the resurgence of the United Farm Workers.
