Abstract

The article presents a critical analysis of the four-panel mural "The Negro's Contribution in the Social and Cultural Development of America" by Millard Sheets for the U.S. Dept. of the Interior Building in Washington, D.C. completed from 1937 to 1948, focusing on the work's meaning in the context of the era's construction of black identity. Topics include the reception of the murals since their installation including by black and white critics, public art as a means of social advocacy, and the collaborative aspects of the work.
