Abstract

The article presents a critical analysis of the 1876-77 painting "The Tramp" by Eastman Johnson, focusing on examination of the themes of geographic mobility and domesticity. Topics include description of the work's subject of a tramp interacting with a family on a rural farm and its cultural meaning at the time of its creation, the reception of the painting by contemporary critics and the author's interpretation of meanings of the work that went unrecognized, and the social and economic factors behind tramp life and public opinion of it.
