Abstract

The article focuses on a study which demonstrates that that 5-hydroxymethyluracil (5hmU) can be produced by direct ten eleven translocation (Tet)-mediated oxidation of thymine bases in stem cell DNA. Topics discussed include spontaneous deamination of cytosine, regulatory roles of base modifications that are produced from thymine and 5hmU modifications resulting from thymine oxidation.
