In this article, the author discusses Portuguese colonial history and the debates and controversies in Portugal about the "Orthographic Agreement." He discusses the views of his father and mother on several issues including the role of Portuguese in globalization, uniqueness of Portuguese civilization and historical future of the Lusophone world. He further discusses the prose "The Fifth Umpire" by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
