Abstract

This article discusses the work of Christian philanthropist Juana Ross de Edwards, including her influence on Chilean society during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The author comments on the focus of Edwards on the poor people of Chile, including the foundation of various institutions to aid and protect them. He also describes the social and economic conditions in Chile during this period and considers the influence of Karl Marx's communist philosophy. The publication of Pope Leo XIII's "Rerum Novarum," which emphasized Christian charity, is also examined.
