Abstract

This article focuses on how the crew of a fishin boat caught a giant squid from the Ross Sea off Antarctica after it attacked their catch of Patagonian toothfish. The body of the squid is 2.5 meters long and is the largest squid yet recorded. It is also the first giant squid found near the surface. Examination of the squid's ovaries revealed only a few tiny eggs, indicating that it had not reached adulthood. The squid died of injuries inflicted while it was hauled abroad the fishing vessel. It is now being held, preserved in ice at Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. INSET: WE HEAR THAT….
