Abstract
- The article comments on the views on cultural exchange and the interpretation of rock art in Southern Africa. The author believes that an exchange of religious ideology did happened, and that agriculturalist values have directly influenced the subject matter of San Rock Art. In the urge of cautious interpretation of rock art with respect to the altered states of consciousness, the author commented that it also relate to altered state of consciousness, which is the trance experiences of Nguni and Sotho diviners whose way of communication is through ancestor spirits and their associated shades. There is no doubt that the San or Bushman had differing value systems, however, common beliefs and attitudes can be found on other groups, the author has inferred.
