Abstract

The article presents an examination on the socioeconomic determinants of divorce in Puerto Rico. It provides the consequence of high divorce rates in Puerto Rico despite the structure of society. Divorce in Puerto Rico has been a puzzling phenomenon for sociologists, demographers, and family researchers. In spite of being mainly Catholic and Hispanic, with well-defined patriarchal sex roles, Puerto Rico has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, surpassed only by the United States and Bermuda. Some studies suggest that some women start sharing the. breadwinner role with their husbands, wives' expectations about the division of labor tend to change i.e., they expect more egalitarian marriages but stay the same for husbands.
