Abstract

In these latest decades several studies found important associations between disgust and the origin and the mantainance of different anxiety disorders (Olatunji & McKay 2007), of eating disorders (Cooper et al. 1998; Aharoni e Hertz 2012), schizophrenia (Schienle et al. 2003), hypocondria (Davey e Bond 2006) and sexual dysfunctions (de Jong, 1998). This review is an update of a previous work based on the same topic (Berle 2006): we examined national and international publications involving the relationship between disgust and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Specifically, our work is based on the distinction between disgust propensity (frequency and intensity of experiencing disgust in specific contexts) and disgust sensitivity (perceived harmful consequences of experiencing disgust) (van Overveld et al. 2006); such distinction was not considered or was still unclear in the previous review. We will try to demonstrate if disgust is uniquely related to OCD, if disgust is associated to a specific OCD subtype and if disgust propensity and sensitivity play a different role in this disorder. In the end, limitations of the studies and future implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
