Abstract

Eager to broaden its scope in the trainer market, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is expanding its KT-1 turboprop line to include an advanced cockpit option, an attack training version and a forward controller or close-air-support version. The expansion program follows the pattern KAI is using in its T-50 advanced jet trainer, which it is developing with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. The biggest change to the KT-1 involves the CAS/forwardcontroller versions, starting with the KO-1 as a replacement forSouth Korea's O-2. The KT-l's standard environmental controls will be modifiedto include a vapor-cycle system as a power-saving measure and anonboard oxygen-generating system. In January 2003, KAI contracted with CMC Flight Visions to develop a full avionics systems integration laboratory for its KT-1C program that is to be ready by late 2004 when the aircraft is expected to enter flight testing.
