Abstract

The opening of a new ballpark always is a watershed moment, but it doesn't seem like either a new beginning for the Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Cincinnati Reds, or a turning point for one of the game's most historic franchises. The Reds are pretenders, and things will get only worse without Ken Griffey Jr., their No. 3 hitter and center fielder, currently out of play due to a dislocated shoulder. But the Reds' problems aren't just on the field. Manager Bob Boone and general manager Jim Bowden are both in the final year of their contracts. The front-office tension is amplified by the fact that Reds minority owner, Bill Reik, is marrying Bowden's former wife on Saturday.
