Abstract

The article discuses religious expression and the legal aspects of snake-handling in Appalachian states such as Tennessee and Kentucky as of April 2014, focusing on a historical overview of snake-handling and its role in religion. According to the article, Tennessee first outlawed the handling of poisonous snakes in 1947. Holiness churches, the Tennessee Supreme Court, and the free exercise of religion are mentioned. Public nuisances and Alabama laws are also examined.
