Abstract

Aircraft parking space assignment is the problem of assigning aircrafts to bridge-equipped or remote parking positions under a number of objectives and constraints. The main objective is to maximize the number of aircrafts assigned to bridge-equipped parking positions. Besides this, the efficient use of parking positions, walking distance of passengers, timetables of the flights, and compatibility of aircrafts with the parking positions are also considered. There are a number of problematic issues in Esenboğa Airport of Ankara where the assignments are made manually. A mathematical programming formulation as well as a heuristic algorithm is developed for the problem, which is coded in Java programming language. According to the tests performed using real life data, the number of aircrafts assigned to bridge-equipped parking positions is increased by 7% using the mathematical model and by 5% using the heuristic in comparison to the current system. Furthermore, the solution time is reduced from the current 4 hours to 1 minute using the mathematical model and to 8 seconds using the heuristic. Large number of parametric analysis are performed in order to improve the system performance even further and to determine the sensitivity of the solution methods to problem parameters.
