Abstract

The article discusses unconventional energy storage systems. Topics include the unpredictability of wind power as an energy source, a pilot program at Portland General Electric (PGE) in Oregon, called Thermal Approach to Grid Energy Storage (TAGES), that uses icy slush to store energy from overproducing wind turbines for use during times when the turbines are still, and a phosphate-based glass for energy storage developed by Halotechnics in Emeryville, California.
