Abstract

In this article, which employs a comparative research method, the creative output of two Lithuanian women artists working on both sides of the iron curtain, the work of Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis (1922-2006) and Kazimiera Zimblytė (Kazė) (1933-1999) is juxtaposed for the first time. Attention is drawn to the choices made by artists - to creative searches that happened in the different geopolitical systems: in socialism, the politically controlled planned economy (Lithuania, USSR /Kazimiera Zimblytė) and capitalism, democratic market economy (New York, USA/ Elena Urbaitytė-Urbaitis). Examining and comparing the work of the two authors, the article concentrates on: - The trauma of political emigration and occupation, endured by artists and how it influenced their work; - The distinction between developing creative choices on both sides of the iron curtain - openi n g up (Urbaitytė-Urbaitis) and d i s tanc i n g (Zimblytė); - The distinctions of publicity of creative work on both side of the iron curtain.
