Abstract

Highlights: [•] Diurnal response of maize photosynthesis, nonstructural carbohydrates and ear dry matter were examined in response to N. [•] Nitrogen application increased plant N uptake, yield, leaf area, chlorophyll content, and soluble protein concentration. [•] Nitrogen application increased photosynthetic rates only during periods of high light intensities in the diurnal cycle.
