Abstract

Presents the views of Melanie McDonagh, an Irish journalist in Great Britain, on relics. Thoughts on the head of St. John the Baptist, of which part is kept at the cathedral church of Amiens, in Picardy; Story of how St. John was martyred; Perception that relics have lives of their own, and help to bring people closer to the saints; Way that the head of St. John was stolen by its donor in Constantinople during the Crusades; Perception that the theft of relics indicated proper devotion to the saint concerned; Idea that saints expressed themselves through the movement of their body parts.
