Abstract

The article discusses the career of Dutch naval war artist Willem van de Velde, the Elder (c. 1611-1693). He was notable for his works detailing the May 28, 1672 Battle of Sole Bay fought off the coast of Suffolk, England between Dutch, French, and British forces, part of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. He was hired with his son and fellow artist Willem van de Velde, the Younger by King Charles II of Great Britain in 1673 as part of the King's policy of encouraging Dutch artists and craftsmen to settle in England.
