Abstract

In its advance through Gentile lands in Acts, the Christian Way confronted civic religion in Lystra, a spirit of divination in Philippi, Athenian religiosity, magic practices and idolatry in Ephesus, and superstition in Malta. The Spanish conquest in Guatemalan territory brought oppression and persecution of Mayan spirituality. Then Protestant Christianity confronted it beginning in the late nineteenth century. The Mayan "intelligentsia" argue that Mayan spirituality has its raison d'être, that Christianity destroys cultures, and that every religion is legitimate, as philosophical pluralism argues. The evangelical response should include recognition of the many positive aspects of Mayan culture together with proclamation of a biblical worldview and the affirmation that salvation is received only through faith in the Christ of the Bible.
