Abstract

A literary criticism of the book "Can't Quit You, Baby," by Ellen Douglas is presented. Topics discussed include the unusual relationship between a white middle-class woman in Mississippi in the 1960s and 1970s and her African-American working-class housekeeper, issues of gender and race specifically the possibilities of cross-racial quasi-feminist solidarity or racial reconciliation, and the postmodern literary theory.
