Abstract

The article discusses why people tend to see outsiders as less human than themselves. Topics include examples of dehumanisation as a precursor to acts of violence, research that suggests some people are more prone to dehumanising behaviour than others, the role of social groups in dehumanisation, and a social psychology study by Jay Van Bavel and colleagues at New York University that suggests group memberships play a role in shaping the perception of others' mental states.
