Abstract
- In this article, the author argues that the actions characteristic of stitching can be usefully considered within the context of actions that are linked with notions of performance and the performative. Against the theories of French philosopher Jacques Lacan, the act of stitching as a material articulation of signifiers is considered as a marking of signification, embodying metonymic actions that have the power to effect a gestural form of utterance.
