Abstract

The article focuses on issues concerning U.S. President George Bush's decision to allow jet fighters to be sold to Taiwan. The first windfall from Bush's decision landed on the Iranian army's chief of logistics, who happened to arrive in China this week on an arms-buying visit. With his hosts in a foul temper over the Taiwan deal, he should find Beijing a shoppers' paradise. The question is how much further the consequences will spread. Most people think Bush's main motive is electoral. The 150 F-16 aircraft that Taiwan will now be allowed to buy are made by General Dynamics, which has a big plant in Fort Worth, Texas. Bush is in a difficult election fight with Bill Clinton, his Democratic rival, and Texas is crucial for the president's chances of keeping his office.
