Abstract

This article focuses on the insurance market in London, England with reference to Lloyd's of London. The collapse of the excess-of-loss reinsurance market has had knock-on effects. The market's capacity may shrink. Capacity can support more insurance than before. Solvency has also become less of a worry. The central fund, which meets losses that names do not, has been doubled after an emergency top-up levy. Over three-quarters of the 1989 losses have already been met by names. Some names who want to stay will fail their solvency test, there is tentative talk of a scheme to help them out.
