Abstract

The article profiles businessman Mohamad Hasan, who controls the forest industry in Indonesia, which accounts for almost half the world's trade in tropical hardwood and is Indonesia's largest earner of foreign exchange after oil and gas. He thinks there should be more jobs in the forest. Hasan's version of ecological responsibility is all about business and competition. He estimates that forestry employs 3.7 million people in Indonesia. Hasan is the chairman of Apkindo, Indonesia's association of plywood makers. This position enables him to tell the country's 130-odd producers how much they will sell, to whom and at what price. The Indonesian government has worthy plans to conserve its forests.
