Acoustic target strength measurement of banded grouper [ Epinephelus awoara (Temming & Schlegel, 1842)] and threadsial filefish [ Stephanolepis cirrhifer (Temming & Schlegel, 1850)] in the South China Sea.

The article presents a study which aims to improve the understanding of target strength (TS) for the two commercially important species, the banded grouper Epinephelus awoara and threadsial filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer, in the South China Sea. The study uses Simrad EY60 split beam portable scientific echosounder to detect TS of the banded grouper and threadsial filefish. It reveals that TS information on the species is needed to estimate population abundance.
