Abstract

This article presents information on the Maastricht treaty on political and economic union, which has been introduced by the European Commission (EC) Commission's proposal that EC spending should rise by 32% over five years has got nowhere because Great Britain and Germany object to the extravagance. A question mark even hangs over the ratification of the Maastricht treaty. Denmark and Ireland will put the treaty to a referendum, and the others to a parliamentary vote. Governments signed the treaty on February 7, but its words may yet change.
