Abstract

This article focuses on Turkey's foreign relations with Iran and Syria. An awkward mix of neighbors has long forced Turkey to make the best of opportunities that present themselves abroad. Turkey's Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel has warned Syria to stop harboring Kurdish guerrillas in Lebanon. Relations with Iran, which had improved despite enduring Iranian suspicion of Turkey's secular constitution, have hit another low. The Turkish government suspects Iran of supporting Turkey's own Kurdish and radical Islamic opposition as part of the wider competition for influence after the collapse of the Soviet empire.
