Abstract

The article deals with the mistakes made by the U.S. government in handling the transition of Haiti to democratic rule. Haiti was governed by elected leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide who won in the 1990 free election conducted by the U.S. government, but he was overthrown by the military. The U.S. government made a mistake in putting Aristide to create a democratic government in the country. Under his rule, he espoused and applauded mob violence against his opponents, the press and the Church. Another mistake committed by the U.S. government is allowing its policy to be made in Latin America. The U.S. committed another mistake when they impose an embargo that impoverished the poor people of Haiti.
