Abstract

In Mexico, geomorphology is a science established only recently. Once it had become institutionalized, from 1986 national geomorphology meetings were held and organized by academic institutions and, since 1994, by the Sociedad Mexicana de Geomorfología. To date, there have been eight meetings, in which 511 papers have been presented. The present study analyzes the themes dealt with in those papers in order to identify who works in geomorphology, their institutional bases, and the main topics that have been developed over the past 25 years. In general, most work is developed in university settings, but work is also undertaken by private companies, government agencies and consulting firms. Most has an applied approach, with the main topics including geomorphological mapping, landslides, hazards and risks, structural and fluvial geomorphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
