Abstract

Objective: to assess the relationship between the level of prostate specific antigen and the amount of blood C-reactive protein, of fibrinogen, of ESR and of albumin, in patients with nonbacterial chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. Material and method. A prospective study was conducted on a total of 88 patients (32 with nonbacterial chronic prostatitis, 27 with benign prostatic hyperplasia, 29 with adenocarcinoma of the prostate) and 30 healthy volunteers. Results. PSA values were significantly different in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (3.85 ± 0.07 ng / ml, p <0.05), and adenocarcinoma of the prostate (8.27 ± 6.18 ng / ml, p <0 05) compared to control (0.9 ± 0.7 ng / ml). Serum PSA is affected by the inflammatory process. The influence of inflammation on the PSA level was realized in obtaining a statistically significant positive correlation between PSA and CRP (chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate adenocarcinoma), between PSA and fibrinogen (prostate cancer) and a negative association between PSA and albumin (benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic adenocarcinoma). Conclusions. PSA values should always be interpreted in the clinical context and of the impact of the inflammatory component in the synthesis of this antigen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
