Abstract

Yellow nail syndrome is the triad of pulmonary illness, lymphedema, and characteristic nail changes. In the absence of pulmonary or lymphedematous sequelae, yellow nail syndrome must be included in the differential of nail disorders and is often a diagnosis of exclusion. Nail pathology is likely caused by lymphatic vessel abnormalities, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Sclerosis of the nail stroma and accumulated biochemical compounds that cause lymphatic obstruction may offer a possible explanation. The most frequently cited treatment for nail changes in yellow nail syndrome is vitamin E therapy, though reports of success vary and evidence is lacking for other treatment options. Spontaneous nail recovery after the resolution of pulmonary symptoms or other underlying disorders is a more frequently reported occurrence. Several other medical conditions have been associated with the disorder and have therefore, influenced treatment decisions. While adult yellow nail syndrome is considered a sporadic entity, pediatric cases show genetic inheritance, furthering confusing the etiology of this disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
