Reports that the president of City College in New York City said that he considered Dr. Leonard Jeffries Jr.'s conduct `racist' and `anti-Semitic,' but decided not to dismiss him as chairman of the black studies department because it would `deepen the sense of crisis on campus.' Jeffries had attracted public attention for his remarks about Jews.
